From the 1960s barbershop waiting-room chairs to the Betty Boop
figurines and green army men that occupy the bathroom under the
watchful eye of a large portrait of Jesus, every inch of the Bang.
Improv Studio is a reflection of the improvisational, experimental
theater it is.
Located south of Melrose in the more vibrant part of Fairfax Avenue,
Bang offers up hysterical long-form improv at low prices. You'll
have plenty of money left over for a bite at nearby Canter's before
or after the show.
The performance space seats about 40 people in a simple, black,
minimalist setting. Pre-show music is a collection of swinging lounge
tunes pumped out of two floor speakers that cause the back row of
chairs to vibrate. Refreshments are available in the lounge, coffee
is free and you can take your snacks into the theater. The very
enthusiastic crowds are a mix of all ages, but all love this experienced
group of improvisers, many of whom have a background at Chicago's
Second City.
