Once known as HBO workspace, the National Comedy Theater primarily
serves as ComedySportz's home base. Outside groups occasionally
rent space, but mostly, the stage is devoted to exclusively to this
group, which is something of an improv chain, with 20 to 30 sister
teams and affiliates performing across the U.S. The theater is well
equipped and professional, but fairly nondescript, a perfect fit
for the show's middle of the road nature.
ComedySportz doesn't allow swearing, sexual humor or any objectionable
sketch ingredients, so the entire family can enjoy a night out.
Private functions aside, there's no alcohol on served on the premises.
Instead, sandwiches, salads and the like are offered in the back
cafe, with no minimum required. This is an unusually pleasant crowd,
void of the typical edginess at most clubs. On the flip side, the
chance of catching groundbreaking talent is low at best.
The theater itself is intimate, comfortable and an excellent venue
to see a performance in, but seating is limited so plan ahead. No
reservations for parties of larger than four will be taken and seating
is on a first-come-first-serve basis.
Sketch suggestions are regularly solicited, and volunteers are occasionally
requested. Enthusiastic participants seem to have the best time.
If you can't find street parking on Saturdays, use the Laser Pacific
parking lot at Seward and Waring. It's usually open for audience
members.
