You'll find Sponda amid Loretta Plaza along
the salty-aired Hermosa strand. The personnel at the "anti-corporate
family operation" is hospitable and the alcove, which is partially
paneled with corkwood, harbors a beach-like, carefree feel. Aside
from the tables, you'll find armchairs, a couch and a gas stove,
which stokes up in only three minutes.
The coffeehouse offers smoothies, an array of coffee drinks, coffee
beans, loose tea and an array of bakery goods, including enormous
cookies. During the day the place is rather quiet and littered with
a handful of professional slackers. But at night Sponda turns into
a buzzing sober nightclub that features live entertainment.
Poetry night takes place on Tuesdays at 9 p.m., and comedians entertain
the artsy fartsy locals on Wednesdays between 8:30 p.m. and 10 p.m.
Thursdays is reserved for Open Mike and sign-ups are between 7 p.m.
and 8 p.m. One artist is featured every week before others are given
their break. Some Sundays, a couple of artists design Mehndi-henna
tattoos for those who are into the trend.
