Built in 1929 by Hollywood legend, Charlie
Chaplin, the intention was to create his own office space. Before
it was completed, however, Mr. Chaplin lost the building in the
divorce settlement to his first wife, Lita Grey.
In the late 1980’s, architect Josh Schweitzer adapted the
building for owners, Executive Chef Mark Peel, Pastry Chef Nancy
Silverton and Wine Buyer Manfred Krankl, for what was to become
a bakery and a restaurant.
La Brea Bakery and Campanile opened in 1989. Since then both Campanile
and La Brea Bakery have been the recipients of numerous awards and
nominations, including James Beard Outstanding Restaurant Award,
Distinguished Restaurant of North America, Nation’s Restaurant
News Restaurant of North America, Los Angeles Culinary Master of
the Year, and nominated for James Beard Outstanding Wine Service
Award and James Beard Best California Chef.
The James Beard Foundation awarded the restaurant with the "Outstanding
Restaurant USA" (2001) award. And, Irene Virbila from the Los
Angeles Times said, "Mark Peel and Nancy Silverton's vibrant
California-Mediterranean cooking expresses the seasons and bounty
of farmer's markets and a network of local purveyors (2001).
