The Castaway, a restaurant at the top of
Burbank’s hills famous for it’s view, which faces south,
is in a versatile location for romance. At the top of Harvard R
(approach from Sunset Canyon Drive in Burbank), one could dine and
admire the scenery.
The dining room features maritime touches such as a large fish tank,
a sailfish mounted on one wall, fishing nets and plenty of hanging
plants. The entrees are uniformly unspectacular, however, the kitchen
turns out acceptable appetizers and desserts.
Crab cakes are light and flavorful, though served in a scanty portion,
and the clam chowder is thick and creamy if somewhat bland. Entrees
are uninspired and overpriced. A king salmon special is served over
chewy bow-tie pasta that's drowning in a marinara-like "red
pepper" sauce. Sautéed, tough prawns, swimming in a
flavorless cream sauce, have a consistency of shellfish that's been
recently thawed.
Desserts are an improvement on a disappointing meal: the white mousse
cake served with chocolate, cream and raspberry sauce is sweet without
being too rich.
