14. Being in this business as long have you been, how do you think music shapes the psychology and behavior of a generation? What positive and negative effects do you see music having on a generation? I think the electronic scene is the best for the youth because it promotes positively, The scene gives you a sense of freedom. In the electronic scene you can be your self . I can't say that about the mainstream because big companies control everything.
If it weren’t for high tech hardware and software coming onto the scene in the 1980’s, it definitely would not be part of this sound today. In the music of previous generations where feeling was expressed through the voice and emotion of performers, electronic music evokes emotion through texture, patterns, different beats, and repetitions. Similar to how tribal drumming affects people collectively during a ceremony, electronic music takes the crowd to an exalted state on a conscious level. The beat, the repetition, the pulse, gets the collective heart beating. It increases the energy of the audience as a whole. It’s all about the electricity that moves through the machine and the sound created to evoke a response in the audience. The brain is electric, as is the vehicle that delivers the sound to the people. Electricity is the link that connects machine to man but the DJ has the power to make that connection as deep, intense and as colorful as he chooses. It’s the uniqueness of a DJ’s interpretation of sound that makes it an almost spiritual experience and a more meaningful connection.
“They create new machines. They create digital music. You can buy new software and create your own music. The technology is helping us move on to the next level as DJs or producers. I think that being a DJ is just not enough anymore. The key to this business is that you have to produce your own music to get it out there for people to hear your sound. I am not just a DJ. I am also a producer. That’s why people know my name. I know DJs who draw 70,000 people, put their lasers on and they just play their music for three hours. They produce their music and they act. They are performers. TIESTO is one of the top DJs in the world. He took electronic music to the next level. He adds performers. It is a whole show. It is a musical. He adds different themes, he changes his clothes, includes ballerinas, acrobats, dancers, and drum players,” explains Amadeus.
Dennis Ivanoff, alias DJ Amadeus, has witnessed how music has shaped the psychology and behavior of a generation. The positive and negative effects have everything to do with the social behavior people choose to partake in. “I think it’s positive because people look forward to going to these clubs. They go there to see DJs. People follow and listen to new tracks. Going to clubs keeps them off the street. I don’t support drugs. I don’t support people trying to understand this music. You don’t need to take drugs just to enjoy the club and the atmosphere. I think that clubs and music change peoples’ lives. People become club promoters, DJs, whatever. When I am in a bad mood I play one of my favorite songs and it takes me away from the negative things happening in the world,” reflects Amadeus.
Given the taste in music of so many people and a variety of musical styles, most people gravitate to a particular DJ. “As an artist, you just have to choose what you want, what you like and you have to create the followers to come to your show. There are big DJs out there who
have been doing this for twenty-five years. Everyone has their own artist that they follow,”
clarifies Amadeus.
If the technology were not available to create the electronic house sound, Amadeus is not sure what he would play. “I can't even imagine that electronic music would not exist. I am sure I would play something else that's in style and I loved. It would make me want to create that sound. I don’t think electronic music will change to anything else. It might shift but it will never die.”
