10. Would you say that being in this part of the music business you have learned a great deal about human behavior? I think that music is a very big part of a lot of people. To see a song I play pick up a person who was previously in a bad mood, and make them dance is incredible.
11. How do you think DJs will shape the future of music? As a DJ/Producer, you find what tickles the crowd, magnify times 20, and drop the bomb.
12. How has music changed compared to the year that you started? Dance music is one big circle. We go from slow to tribal to synthy trance and back again.
13. Where do you think music is going in the next 5 years? Will it be less “tribal” sounding or even more experimental with techno sound applications? The next five years should be interesting. We’re seeing a revolution whereas cross-breeding between genres of music has led to such extremes as trance influenced Hip Hop(i.e. Kayne West).
14. Being in this business as long have you been, how do you think music shapes the psychology and behavior of a generation? What positive and negative effects do you see music having on a generation? I think that the generation actually shapes the psychology of music. Music doesn’t make people, people make music. What’s popular in music depends on how society feels during different political and social climates.
15. During the 60’s, the music was far different than it is today. There seemed to be more melodies and less back beat techno music where the lyrics reflected that generation’s fight for causes. Do you ever see music reverting to that state again and if not, why? Music is reflective of current events. It has been said that history repeats itself. I have an immense amount of respect and admiration for the willpower of that generation and the way the people stood up for their beliefs. Although I can not predict the future, I hope music reverts to the state of positive expression in the generation to come!
16. I remember hearing a DJ on the radio describing Beatle George Harrison’s take on the music of this generation. He said, “When I listened to the top 40, by the time I got to number one, I wanted to kill somebody!” Apparently, his complaint was the back beat was similar and there was a real lack of variety in the songs. Why is it that one generation’s feeling for the music of the next generation lacks tolerance? I think that people tend to seclude themselves and by doing so they miss the chance to appreciate all that is music.
17. How do the political socio-economic influences affect the direction of music? Would you say that the high tech industry is responsible for the lack of feeling in music today or do they just express that feeling through different patterns and beats – more repetition etc.? I am a much greater fan of “trending” than “trends”. While easy to blame high tech equipment, I feel that the advance in industry brings forth more musical opportunities than in the past.
18. Given the hours you have listened to music and how you see people responding to it, what advice would you give to new musicians today as to what is effective and non-effective music (e.g. getting an audience to move , buy) or does that just depend on the generation, their influences and what shapes them? My advice would be to go back…Go way back. Explore classical music to understand what music is. Its fundamentals are important before launching an expedition blindly and self proclaiming yourself as a producer.
19. How does location affect what music you play as a DJ? For example, with respect to the push for globalization, how will this affect the music you play locally? Are certain songs more popular that you play in New York as opposed to what a DJ would play in Miami? What works in one city may not work in another. You have to be willing to test the waters! Products of globalization such as the internet has allowed for a certain degree of standardization in terms of what is “acceptable club music”.
Just as they are standardizing education, do you think music will ever have a standard forced upon it or is music as individual as each generation’s consciousness? Music is creativity at it’s finest. It is poetry in motion driven by a generation’s conscious without boundaries.
