What an amazing dining experience. I would do it again in a heartbeat. The long review is long but the food requires it.
Going to Daniel was a highly anticipated event for me. I think of it as one of pinnacles restaurant experiences in this country and it did live up to my expectations.
First of all, the place is positively beautiful and not too over the top fancy. Jackets are required for men. We were seated at a table on the inside of the balcony, which overlooks the main floor, a perfect place for me to watch people and food.
Shortly after being seated we were presented with a lovely three-tiered silver tray with little amuses. They were little cheesey gougeres, tiny parmesan cups filled with a cheese mousse, Asian style spoons holding 2 bites of eggplant caviar and little white bowls with a perfectly diamond shaped piece of sardine with a dot each of a red and bright green sauce. All of the tastes were amazing and fully satisfying.
We ordered wines by the glass so we could taste some different things. I started with a French Meritage, which was nice and light and really worked with the early mix of flavors. Ken had a Mersault that was richer and even more delicious. I finished mine and had the Hobbs chardonnay with my dinner which I liked the best of the three.
Apps: I ordered the “Romaine Letttuce soup with Black Truffle Coulis, Sauteed sweet Maine Shrimp and Crispy onion rings.” At first I didn’t love it because I was really expecting to taste romaine. After I mixed it all up and combined the flavors of the drops of truffle and a white dollop, which I think was creme fresh in the center, it tasted great, but still not really like lettuce. Ken’s was heavenly! “Handmade Nine Herb Ravioli with Sunchokes, Porcini Parmesan Emulsion and Herb Salad.” What a perfect dish! It was so light and completely full of flavor. This is the kind of dish a restaurant can build a reputation on. I loved the contrasting textures of the herbs, cooked in the ravioli and the fresh . The ravioli were shaped like little circus tents. The generous size of the portions surprised me. I really expected much less.
