Brave the world with nothing but a backpack and you’ll be changed forever. But where do you start? The world’s a big place and some countries are better for backpacking than others. Trekkers need cheap lodging and mass transit that's easily accessible. They also need friendly hosts and other travelers to share in the adventure. The following 10 countries have it all and more.
Number 10 Czech Republic
The Czech Republic has some of the best-preserved medieval and Renaissance architecture in Europe. It’s also cheap and brimming with bars, restaurants and nightlife. Hostels are inexpensive and plentiful and the country’s train system is extensive.
Must see: Don’t miss Prague, of course. It’s the main destination of any traveler to the Czech Republic and it’s a haven for backpackers. You’ll find English-speaking hosts, plenty of fellow travelers, good food, and great sights. And jump into a time machine to explore the ancient villages of Moravia.
Number 9 India
India is enchanting, especially for backpackers. From the Taj Mahal to bustling Bangalore, India has got it all. There are hostels a plenty in every major city and in many small towns and villages. India’s transportation system is extensive, so you’ll be able to get around.
Must see: India is big and beautiful, and there’s a lot to see. Start with Mumbai (formerly known as Bombay), possibly India’s most vibrant city. It’s a city of roughly 18 million -- one of the largest in the world -- and is home to Bollywood. From there, head west into the small state of Goa. Here you’ll find calming beaches, temples and historic sites.
Number 8 Thailand/Vietnam
Thailand is a backpacker’s paradise. It’s cheap, it has a good mass transit system and there’s enough to keep the most experienced traveler fascinated for months. Neighboring Vietnam has blossomed in recent years, flourishing as one of Southeast Asia’s fastest-growing nations. And it’s a travel hot spot, thanks to friendly hosts, spicy food, engaging scenery, and a fascinating history. Put Thailand and Vietnam on your trip planner and you won’t be sorry.
Must see: Don’t miss the glorious beaches of Southern Thailand. Stick to less popular destinations like Koh Chang and Ko Pha Ngan for a relaxing visit. If you’re into history, head to Sukhothai, Thailand’s ancient capital city. When you’re in Vietnam, check out Hanoi and Danang City. Both serve up fantastic historical sites and Danang has some spectacular beaches.
Number 7 The Netherlands
Amsterdam has long been a hot spot for tourists looking for culture, history and a little illicit action. As a result, it has long catered to tourists of every ilk, and especially backpackers. But there’s more to the Netherlands than Amsterdam. The country is great for backpackers, offering metropolitan action, bucolic retreats and everything in between.
Must see: If you’re in Amsterdam, it’s hard to miss De Wallen, the city’s most famous red-light district. Here you’ll find avenues full of prostitutes (legal), cannabis clubs and sex shops. If that’s too much for you, head out into the Netherlands’ serene countryside. The best way to tour the verdant plains is by bike. Bring your own or rent a bike and take a ride.
Number 6 Chile
Chile is often overlooked as a travel destination, if for no other reason than its remoteness. But this South American country is a fantastic travel destination, featuring a unique mesh of Mesoamerican and European cultures that manifests in spicy food and street-side bistros. It’s also a natural wonderland, featuring some stunning scenery.
Must see: Chile spans half the continent of South America, north to south, so it’ll be difficult to see it all. After some time in Santiago, head north to Iquique and Arica, both calm coastal cities next to the Atacama Desert, one of the driest places on the planet. Explore the desert (carefully), mountain hot springs and oases, then lounge on the beach.
