  Top 10: Weird Sports Streaks

We all know about some of the most famous sports streaks like Joe DiMaggio’s 56-game hitting streak, Lance Armstrong’s seven consecutive Tour de France titles and Rocky Marciano’s 49 consecutive heavyweight boxing victories.

What about the odd or unusual streaks in sports? What of the streaks that are often overlooked or simply deemed irrelevant?

Here is a list of 10 of the weirdest sports streaks that history has to offer.

Number 10
Tampa Bay Devil Rays

Lost three consecutive games when leading by three or more

Hall of Fame pitcher Bob Lemon once said, “I've come to the conclusion that the two most important things in life are good friends and a good bull pen.” The Tampa Bay Devil Rays, however, have only been able to find some good friends at this point.

In 2005, the Devil Rays became the first team in more than 100 years of baseball to take leads of three runs or more in three consecutive games and lose all three games.

Although the franchise has only been around since 1998, they haven’t wasted any time setting all sorts of new dismal benchmarks for bull pen failures. They are also the only team ever to have three different relievers blow ninth-inning save opportunities in three consecutive games.

Number 9
Kansas City Wizards

637 minutes without a goal

Defensive-minded teams like the San Antonio Spurs and New Jersey Devils are known to bromide fans with their slow pace and emphasis on boring-to-watch fundamentals, but not even they compare to Major League Soccer’s Wizards.

From September 5, 1998, to April 10, 1999, the Wizards didn’t score a single goal, which stands as the longest scoreless streak in MLS history.

It is not so surprising to note that during that hideous scoreless streak, which started in 1998 and ended in 1999, it also happened to be the two seasons that the Wizards averaged their lowest attendance in franchise history.

Number 8
Philadelphia Flyers

330 man games lost to injury

In every sport, injuries perennially cripple at least one team’s hopes and dreams. In the 2005-2006 season, the Philadelphia Flyers persevered through the pain, but eventually the wear and tear caught up with them. The Flyers lost a number of key contributors to a team-record 330 man games, meaning that in total, the number of games missed by regulars added up to an astounding 330 games. Among the wounded were forwards Simon Gagne, Sami Kapanen and Michal Handzus and defensemen Derian Hatcher, Chris Therrien and Mike Rathje. The Flyers entered the playoffs without team captain Keith Primeau, who only made nine regular-season games, and premier offensive defenseman Kim Johnsson, who was limited to 47 games.
The Flyers were bounced in their first-round series by the Buffalo Sabres.

Number 7
Tom Burgoyne (Phillie Phanatic)

Longest serving mascot

Tom Burgoyne had the rub of green when he responded to a ”Mascot wanted” ad in The Philadelphia Inquirer in 1989. He was hired to back up Dave Raymond, the original Phanatic, and took over the lead role in 1994 once Raymond moved on. It’s not easy being green, especially when you have to suit up in a boiling hot costume and prance around outdoors in the summer months. The smell inside is also very far from anything that Ralph Lauren would want to capture in a bottle. But even so, Burgoyne hasn’t turned his nose away; he entered his 14th season as the Phillie Phanatic in 2007.
