  Top 10: Weird Sports Streaks

Number 6
Washington Senators

100 consecutive road series without a sweep

When franchises start up -- be it from expansion or a move -- they typically don’t succeed for years as they grow accustomed to their new surroundings.

The Washington Senators, the franchise that is now in Minnesota and known as the Twins, was moved to the American League in 1901 and didn’t post a winning record for 11 seasons.

From 1901 to 1905, the Senators averaged 53 wins per season and during that span they ran a streak of 100 consecutive road series without a sweep. That streak is the longest in baseball history, although the Montreal Expos (88) and Kansas City Royals (86) have challenged it in the last decade.

Number 5
Pedro Ramos
Four consecutive seasons leading MLB in losses

Pedro Ramos might be best remembered as the guy who gave up a monster home run to Mickey Mantle, which nearly became the first home run to completely leave Yankee Stadium.

Ramos, a 15-year MLB pitcher and one-time all-star, led the Major Leagues in losses in 1958 (18), 1959 (19), 1960 (18), and 1961 (20). While Phil Niekro would later tie his record, Ramos stands alone as having the lowest all-time winning percentage (.421) among pitchers who started at least 275 games.

On a positive note, he was a part of the only all-Cuban triple play in MLB history.

Number 4
1991 Indianapolis Colts
21 consecutive quarters without a touchdown

If one is the loneliest number, then 1991 was a destitute season for the Indianapolis Colts: They finished with one win and 15 losses.

Not only were wins hard to come by, but scoring touchdowns was just as arduous. The Colts strung together 21 quarters without a single touchdown. Although that record was matched by the 2000 Ravens, the 21-quarter drought is the longest in NFL history.

The Colts finished with a total of 143 points in the season -- which is what Peyton Manning can do in about three good games.

The Colts’ 143 points and 14 touchdowns set new records for fewest points and touchdowns in a 16-game season.

Number 3
Philadelphia Phillies
16 consecutive losing seasons

If winning breeds confidence, logic dictates that losing will breed insecurity.

After two consecutive second-place finishes in 1917 and 1918, the Phillies slipped into a seemingly endless pit of self-doubt. During the next three decades, they held down either last place or second-last place in the National League a total of 24 times.

That awful streak entailed five consecutive seasons with 100 or more losses (1938-1942) and also a span of 16 consecutive sub-.500 seasons (1933-1948).

Their dubious streak is in jeopardy, though: The Pittsburgh Pirates have not finished with a winning record in 14 seasons and look to be serious contenders.
